The Health Assessment Advisory Service at Sunderland (St Mary’s Way) Assessment Centre is located on the Mezzanine Level. It has 12 assessment rooms.

It can be accessed by lift but if an emergency evacuation of the building is required such as a fire alarm, the lift cannot be used. There are 12 steps to the ground floor.

If you think that you would have difficulty going down the stairs unaided in the event of an emergency, please contact us at least two days before your appointment date so we can make alternative arrangements for you.

There is a drop-off point on Plater Way outside the north-facing entrance of the building, which can be used by taxis and other vehicles.

  • Work Capability Assessment for people claiming Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Other benefit assessments for people claiming a range of benefits such as Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children or Veterans UK

Train

Sunderland Central train station is located 0.4 miles from the Assessment Centre.

Upon leaving the station, walk up Burdon Road and continue onto Fawcett Street, then turn left onto High Street. Turn right onto Cumberland Street, then take another right onto St Mary’s Way for the Assessment Centre.

Car

From Newcastle/A184

From Tyne Bridge, cross then use the middle lane to continue on Gateshead Highway. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Park Lane and continue until Testos junction. Take the third exit onto the A1290 slip road.

At Hylton Grange interchange, take the first exit onto Wessington Way, and stay on it via the second exit at the roundabout. At the next roundabout, stay on Wessington Way by taking the third exist. Turn right onto Northern Spire Bridge, then take the second exit at the roundabout onto Silksworth Row. At the following roundabout, take the first exit onto Livingstone Road.

Bus

The nearest bus stop to the Assessment Centre is City Hall, directly outside the Centre.
